The accidental discovery of penicillin was a miracle, but the effects of the antibiotic monumentally impacted our society. Purification of penicillin made an antibiotic that saved lives of soldiers and civilians around the world. During World War II, more soldiers could serve since they no longer fell ill to simple diseases and infections. Accessible and cheap production allowed people to live healthier and longer lives. Penicillin's ability to save millions of lives earned the miracle antibiotic the title of "The Wonder Drug."
